"When I started a new role as a senior leader of our IT support team, my first meeting was in the office of our general counsel to discuss a poorly designed job ladder that had been implemented for the team. Our counsel and HR were concerned that the implementation was opening our institution to risk of lawsuit or loss of staff. So we needed to fix things and fix them correctly. I had been working with Belinda Peavey at the time as she helped our new CIO build a cohesive leadership team and was impressed with her methods and knowledge. I asked her to consult with myself and my newly appointed leaders on how to implement a new approach to the job ladder. Belinda met with us weekly to establish best practice in defining job descriptions, roles and responsibilities, and tiers of achievement that were measurable and actionable. Her deep expertise in HR best practice and her ability to explain and substantiate its value to laymen leaders was critical to our success. She steered us to implement a framework that was clear, concise, and functional for its objective. The result of this early work was not only successful for the initial project but also provided significant dividends for my teams, our department, and more broadly the institution writ large. We designed a competency framework that has become the exemplar for other departments as we have worked with our own Human Resources department to scale the framework for other job contexts.
Personally, the competency framework that was the result of Belinda's teaching is now a part of a strategic approach I use in hiring and building teams for my part of the IT organization. I credit Belinda for having taught us the principles of human resources practice so well. She took time to show us how and why these principles are not only part of managing risk in resource staffing but more importantly, they provide a positive foundation for leadership in supporting and valuing staff.
I would highly recommend Belinda's services for any organization that is looking to do HR right. We often think that as leaders we are simply managing staff. But Belinda taught us that our staff are our greatest resource. She taught that you cannot expect those resources to achieve without well-defined and well-articulated expectations. She further reinforced my belief that good leadership is foundational to an organization's success. And her lessons live with me still."
